Chanel The New Smoky Eyeshadow Palette Review: 587 The New Smoky
Chanel The New Smoky Eyeshadow Palette is one of the most intriguing launches from the new Coco Mademoiselle makeup collection. With its sophisticated mix of soft browns, rosy tones, mauves and luminous shades, the Les 9 Ombres 587 The New Smoky is Chanel’s modern interpretation of the classic smoky eye.
But is this beautiful Chanel eyeshadow palette actually worth the luxury price tag?
I put Chanel The New Smoky to the test with close-up swatches and a complete makeup look to see how the shades perform and, more importantly, how wearable this palette really is.
Chanel The New Smoky Palette: First Impressions
The first thing that caught my attention is, of course, the packaging.
The classic Chanel black compact feels instantly luxurious, while the nine eyeshadows inside create a very elegant and cohesive colour story.
This isn’t a traditional smoky palette filled with black, charcoal and very dark grey shades. Instead, Chanel has taken the idea of the smoky eye and made it softer, warmer and much more wearable.
The palette combines brown, pink, mauve, bronze and luminous neutral tones, creating a colour story that can work for both understated daytime makeup and a more sophisticated evening look.
The overall effect is very Chanel: polished, refined and elegant rather than overly dramatic.
Chanel Les 9 Ombres 587 The New Smoky: The Shades
The palette contains nine eyeshadows, with different textures and finishes designed to be used together or individually.

The colour selection moves from lighter illuminating shades to deeper browns and mauves, with pink and metallic-looking tones adding dimension.
What I particularly like about the colour story is that it doesn’t feel like a typical neutral palette.
There are enough soft, wearable shades to create an everyday eye look, but the deeper tones allow you to build a more intense smoky eye when you want something more dramatic.
The luminous shades are especially important because they prevent the palette from looking too flat. They can be used on the centre of the eyelid, inner corner or even layered over other shades to add more dimension.
Chanel The New Smoky Swatches
Swatching the palette is the best way to appreciate how different the shades look in the pans compared with their actual colour and texture.
In my YouTube video, I show all nine Chanel The New Smoky eyeshadows up close, so you can see the shades and finishes in natural detail before deciding whether this is a palette you would actually use.
Some of the colours appear particularly sophisticated when swatched together because the palette has been designed around subtle tonal variations rather than strong contrasts.
This makes it much easier to create a seamless smoky eye without the look becoming too harsh.

My Chanel The New Smoky Makeup Look
After swatching the palette, I wanted to see how the shades work together on the eyes.
For my makeup look, I created a soft, sophisticated smoky eye using the palette’s neutral and rosy tones.
Rather than going for an extremely dark or graphic smoky eye, I wanted to keep the result elegant and wearable while still showing what the deeper shades can do.
The combination of softly blended browns, rosy tones and luminosity gives the eyes definition without making the overall makeup look heavy.

And this is probably the biggest strength of Chanel The New Smoky: it allows you to create a smoky effect while keeping the finish refined.
Is Chanel The New Smoky Good for Everyday Makeup?
Yes — and this is one of the reasons I find the palette interesting.
Although it is called The New Smoky, you don’t have to create a dramatic smoky eye every time you use it.
The lighter shades can be used for a simple daytime look, while the mid-tone browns and mauves can be layered to create more definition.
For evening makeup, you can intensify the outer corner and add one of the luminous shades to the lid for a more glamorous result.
So, despite being a luxury palette, the colour story is surprisingly versatile.
Is Chanel The New Smoky Worth the Price?
This is where things become more complicated.
Chanel The New Smoky is a luxury makeup purchase, and at around the €130 price point, it isn’t a palette I would recommend buying simply because it is beautiful.
The real question is whether the Chanel experience, packaging, colour story and overall formula make sense for you.
If you already own several neutral eyeshadow palettes, there are certainly less expensive alternatives that can recreate a similar smoky colour story.
However, if you are a Chanel collector, love the brand’s refined aesthetic, or are specifically looking for a sophisticated palette with a very Chanel feel, The New Smoky is much more interesting.
For me, the appeal isn’t simply the number of shades. It’s the way the colours have been put together to create that soft, polished Chanel smoky eye.
Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Makeup Collection
The New Smoky palette is part of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle Crush makeup collection, which brings the aesthetic of the iconic fragrance into colour cosmetics.
The result is very different from a classic black smoky eye: softer, more feminine and much easier to wear.
It also makes sense with the overall Coco Mademoiselle aesthetic — sophisticated, sensual and polished without feeling overly complicated.
Chanel The New Smoky Eyeshadow Palette Review: Final Thoughts
After testing the palette, I think Chanel The New Smoky 587 is a beautiful example of Chanel taking a classic makeup concept and giving it a more modern interpretation.
The colour story is elegant, wearable and sophisticated, with enough variation to create several different eye looks.
However, at this price, I would definitely recommend looking at the swatches and makeup look before buying.
If you’re simply looking for a practical neutral eyeshadow palette, you can find much more affordable options.
If, on the other hand, you’re looking for that particular Chanel luxury makeup experience, love soft smoky eyes and are drawn to the Coco Mademoiselle aesthetic, this palette is definitely worth a closer look.
